In the novel The Hot Zone, animal cruelty is a major dilemma faced. The Hot Zone is an example of both the good and bad animal use, specifically monkeys. The bad part of what the U.S. Army is doing to the monkeys is that they are purposefully injected the healthy monkeys with the deadly virus called Ebola. After the monkeys are infected with the virus they give the monkeys a treatment to find out if the treatment can help cure Ebola. Usually the monkeys die and are dissected to find the cause of death. The important need for these monkeys is that they help people become more similar with the Ebola virus. These monkeys also help with treatment and cures for viruses like Ebola. The characters involved in the animal cruelty parts of the novel are Nancy Jaax (the women who fights to work in bio 4 and cuts her glove when dissecting a monkey), Gene Johnson (the guy in charge of the Ebola experiment), and Tony Johnson (Nancy's immediate supervisor and is with her when she cuts her glove). These characters do not mean to be cruel or hurtful to the monkeys in any way. Actually the characters involved in Ebola experiment do not like the sight of blood they just want to help the lives of other animals and humans in the greatest way possible.
